Cinco de Mayo is about Mexico’s unexpected victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 — not Mexican Independence Day, which is actually September 16.
What actually happened 1862, Puebla, Mexico: The Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, was outnumbered 2-to-1 by French forces. Against the odds, Mexico won the battle. Why it mattered: It didn’t end the war — France occupied Mexico from 1863-1867. But the win became a huge symbol of resistance, morale, and national pride. Made a holiday: Mexican President Benito Juárez declared May 5 a national holiday in 1867 after France was finally defeated. How it’s celebrated today In Mexico: It’s mostly a regional holiday. The state of Puebla marks it with military parades, battle reenactments, and festivals. Most of Mexico treats it as a modest observance, not a major national party. In the U.S.: It’s way bigger here than in Mexico. It started in California in 1863 as Mexican-American communities raised money for troops. In the 1960s-70s, Chicano activists embraced it to promote cultural pride. By the 1980s, beer companies and restaurants commercialized it. Now it’s mainly a celebration of Mexican-American culture and heritage with food, music, parades, and yes, tacos + margaritas. Common mix-up
People often confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day. Independence Day is Sept 16, 1810 — when Father Miguel Hidalgo started the fight for freedom from Spain. Cinco de Mayo is 50+ years later and about standing up to France.
